4D Ultrasound Baby Imaging FAQs

What is the difference between a 3d and 4D ultrasound scan?

The simplest explanation of the difference is 3D images are comparable to photographs, while 4D is video, showing your baby actually moving.

When is the best time to schedule 3D/4D sonogram (ultrasound imaging) of my baby?

The 3D/4D sonogram (ultrasound imaging) can be performed between 27 and 34 weeks.  For optimum baby imaging, we suggest 29 to 34 weeks.  In the case of twins, sonograms should occur around 25 weeks.  Twins have less space and imaging can be difficult at a later date.

How far in advance should I schedule my baby’s 3D/4D ultrasound scanning?

You should call to schedule your imaging appointment 2-3 weeks in advance, or sooner if a specific date or appointment time is desired.  Appointment times are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Will insurance pay for my 3D/4D ultrasound baby imaging?

Since this is an elective exam, it is not covered by insurance    Payment is due at the time of exam.  We accept cash, debit card or credit card.

Will a physician review my 3D/4D ultrasound scan?

Since this is not a diagnostic study, a report will not be sent to your physician.  You must have prior consent from your physician to have your 3D/4D ultrasound.  If an abnormality is detected, this consent will give us permission to notify your physician.  A copy of the consent form is available here.

Who will perform my 3D/4D ultrasound scan?

Your ultrasound scan (sonogram) will be performed by a registered sonographer with experience in obstetric and 3D/4D imaging.  Our expertise allows for every attempt to obtain the best images of your baby.

How many people can be a part of my 3D/4D experience?

We allow up to five people in the imaging room.  Children under 7 should be accompanied by an adult.

Is there an additional charge for 3D/4D imaging if I am pregnant with multiples?

There is no additional charge.  However, it is recommended that you come for your ultrasound at 25 weeks to allow for better imaging.

Is there a prep for the 3D/4D ultrasound scan?  Are there any suggestions to help achieve the best images of my baby?

Every attempt will be made to achieve optimal images at the time of your visit.  Some limitations that are unavoidable may be due to fetal position, low amniotic fluid and advanced gestational age.  It may help to drink 20 oz of juice or soda (with sugar).  This could help to increase the activity of your baby and add to the 3D/4D experience.

If we cannot get high-quality images of your baby, we will allow you the opportunity to return for a repeat 3D/4D ultrasound scan.  As a courtesy to you, this return visit will be at no additional charge. AS A COURTESY TO YOU WE ALLOW EVERY CUSTOMER THE OPPORTUNITY TO RETURN FOR A REPEAT 3D/4D ULTRASOUND, IF FOR SOME REASON, WE CAN’T ACHIEVE OPTIMAL IMAGES OF YOUR BABY. THIS RETURN VISIT WILL BE AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE.
